In terms of our actions, this means reducing or even preventing damage through responsible consumption, the careful use of resources and the timely identification of potential threats to the environment and climate. We are committed to protecting the environment and the climate.
Science based Climate protection target

Reduction of Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions by 42% by 2030 (BY 2019/2020)

Reduction of Scope 3 emissions (value chain without FLAG) by 25% by 2030 (BY: 2021/2022)

Reduction of Scope 3 emissions (FLAG value chain) by 30.3% by 2030 (BY: 2021/2022).

In addition, METRO wants to achieve net-zero by 2050.

Results FY 2024/25 In the reporting year, the value of Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions amounted to 0.8 million tonnes of CO2e. This equates to a reduction of 26.2% compared to the base year 2019/20. The value of Scope 3 GHG emissions amounted to 32.8 million tonnes of CO2e. This corresponds to an increase of 3.3% compared to the base year 2021/22. (The calculations are based on secondary emission factor databases, which are broken down according to a life cycle approach. All FLAG emissions are exclusively focused on the upstream value chain.)

Water Protection Target

METRO has set itself a new water savings target in fiscal year 2021/22:
Reduction of the specific water consumption by 10% in our own operations per square metre of net operating area by 2030 compared to the base year 2020/21.

Reduction of CO₂ in own operations

EV100 initiative commitment

Expansion of charging infrastructure, including the parking lots of local METRO stores to 1,000 charging points till 2030.

Promotion of electric mobility in METRO’s own fleet of vehicles to reach nearly 100% availability of electrical or high-quality hybrid vehicles by 2030.

Results FY 2024/25 End of September 2025 8.9% of the group-wide company car fleet is electrified. In the delivery business (FSD) there are 2,966 company-owned trucks, of which 1.5% are electrically powered. Currently, 1,375 charging stations at METRO sites worldwide are operated by an external provider and are available to customers and the company’s own workforce.

Low carbon food system

Commitment/Policy/Position Target
CGF Commitment on Food waste METRO wants to reduce food waste in our own operations (stores and warehouses) by 50% per cent by 2025. We have committed to achieving this in a resolution of the Consumer Goods Forum.
Results FY 2024/25

In the reporting period, the value of food surpluses is 44.1 million kilograms. This corresponds to a reduction of 11.2% compared to the base year 2021/22.

WRI 10x20x30 Commitment: Champion 12.3 – 10x20x30 initiative on Food waste METRO to work together with WRI (World Resources institute) and engage 20 of its suppliers to commit to halving their food waste by 2030 in line with SGD 12.3.
METRO Packaging Policy with regards to own brand products

We aim by 30 September 2030:

  1. Plastic Reduction Initiative
    We target to reduce 10,000 tonnes of plastic in our own brand plastic packaging.
  2. Increase Recycled Content
    We target ti achieve 30% recycled plastic content in our own brand packaging
  3. Phasing out Substances of Concern
    We are committed to completelyphasing out Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) and expanded polystyrene (EPS) from all levels of our own brand packaging.
  4. Packaging Circularity
    We target to have 100% of our own brand packaging designed to be recycleable, reusable, or home compostable.
  5. Paper, Paperboard & Wood Commitment
    We traget to use Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC®) / Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification Schemes (PEFC) certified materials or a minimum of 70% recycled content for all paper, paperboard, cardboard, and wood used in our own brand packaging in primary and secondary packaging level.
Results FY 2024/25

The reporting on own-brand packaging is currently on hold as data collection and processing is redesigned as part of a system migration. Structured reporting is expected to resume in the coming reporting period.
