A Look Inside a METRO Store

We drive progress in a targeted manner and make responsible business practices the core of everything we do – both in our multichannel business and in our collaboration with our customers and partners.

In doing so, we prioritize climate-conscious and efficient practices and put people first to foster growth and actively shape the future of wholesale.

Our ESG strategy focuses on four key areas of action

METRO ESG Strategy - Sustainable Wholesale. Strong Communities.

This is how we set our priorities and align our actions accordingly – while at the same time making a targeted contribution to the implementation of our corporate strategy, sCore.

METRO ESG Strategy - Climate & Carbon

Climate & Carbon

We are reducing our emissions and waste in our own business operations and, through targeted measures, are contributing to the decarbonization of our value chain.

METRO ESG Strategy - Ethics and Trust

Ethics & Trust

METRO ensures safe and fair working conditions in its own operations and promotes transparent supply chains while taking human rights and environmental considerations into account.

METRO ESG Strategy - People and Community

People & Community

At METRO, employees are the key to the company’s success. That is why METRO promotes a diverse, inclusive, and healthy work culture by focusing on the development and well-being of its employees and fostering an inclusive leadership culture. At the same time, METRO sees itself as part of society and is committed to strong communities and social projects in the regions where the company operates.

METRO ESG Strategy - Corporate Governance

Governance

Integrity, transparency, and a sense of responsibility characterize our corporate governance and are firmly embedded as guiding principles in our business processes and decision-making structures.

You can also find more information about our goals, initiatives, and progress in our Sustainability Report (2024/25 Annual Report, starting on page 42).

Actively Managing Sustainability

Sustainability is firmly embedded in the structures and processes of our core business. The Executive Board of METRO AG is involved in all key sustainability issues and is regularly informed about progress.

Achieving key sustainability goals – such as reducing CO₂ emissions or food waste – is directly linked to the compensation of the Executive Board and international senior management.

The ESG Peer Group is our central body for sustainability. It defines the strategic framework, sets Group-wide goals, and promotes dialogue at the highest management level. It is chaired by representatives of top management, supplemented by key functions such as Procurement, Quality Assurance, Supply Chain, Strategy, Finance, Governance, Communications, and Sustainability.

Our METRO companies manage the operational implementation of these overarching goals in accordance with their respective market and customer requirements. They develop specific measures, monitor their implementation, and measure progress.

Sustainability is also closely linked to our Group-wide opportunity and risk management. Through structured processes, we identify and assess relevant developments at an early stage and can respond in a targeted manner.
